what happened
- GitHub announced on April 27, 2026 that all Copilot plans would move to usage-based billing on June 1, 2026, replacing premium request units with GitHub AI Credits.[1]
- Credits are consumed by token use, including input, output and cached tokens, at each model's published API rates.[1]
- Paid plans include monthly AI Credits equal to their price: Pro $10, Pro+ $39, Business $19 per user and Enterprise $39 per user; existing Business and Enterprise customers get promotional monthly credits of $30 and $70 respectively for June, July and August.[1]
- Code completions and Next Edit suggestions remain included in all plans and do not consume AI Credits.[1]
- Admins can set budgets at the enterprise, cost center and user levels, pool included usage across the organization, and either allow extra usage at published rates or cap spending.[1]
- Annual Pro and Pro+ subscribers stay on premium-request pricing until their plan expires, with model multipliers increasing on June 1.[1,2]
- GitHub's documentation confirms that 'as of June 1, 2026, GitHub replaced request-based billing with usage-based billing,' with the cost of an interaction depending on the model and the number of tokens consumed.[2]
