what happened
- Node.js 20 'Iron' reached end-of-life on 2026-04-30, according to the Node.js Release Working Group schedule.[1]
- The Node.js project says end-of-life versions 'will no longer receive updates, including security patches', that many packages drop support for them, and that many industry audits forbid unmaintained runtimes.[3]
- Node.js 24 'Krypton' entered Active LTS on 2025-10-28 and is scheduled to reach end-of-life on 2028-04-30. Node.js 22 'Jod' moved to maintenance on 2025-10-21 and ends on 2027-04-30.[1]
- Node.js 26.0.0 was released on May 5, 2026, with the Temporal date/time API on by default, V8 14.6 and Undici 8.0.2. It is scheduled to enter LTS on 2026-10-28.[4,1]
- Node.js 26 is the last release line under the old model. From Node.js 27 there is one major release a year, every line becomes LTS, and each line gets 36 months of total support.[5]
- AWS Lambda deprecated the nodejs20.x runtime on April 30, 2026. It will block new function creation on July 29, 2027 and function updates on August 31, 2027.[6]
- Node.js advises that production applications 'should only use Active LTS or Maintenance LTS releases'.[2]
where sources differThe Node.js Release WG table still labels 24.x 'Active LTS' but lists its Maintenance start as 2026-10-20; nodejs.org's releases page labels v24 simply 'LTS'.
